THE HEART CLUB: A HEARTFELT ENDEAVOR
This summer, the club members of the Kingston branch proved that they weren’t afraid to show their true hearts as part of the Heart Club. The summer program provides the children an opportunity to give back to the community by comforting others with heartfelt greeting cards and crafts.
Originally, the program was conceived to give club kids a chance to craft little projects for patients in local children’s hospitals, but very early into its existence, the program developed to cover a larger scope of recipients. The Heart Club quickly grew in its aim, creating small gifts not only for children at local hospitals but also for soldiers in Iraq without families.
The Kingston branch launched the program in late June on a bi-weekly schedule, giving club kids the opportunity to create greeting cards and crafts twice a month during their summer break. Club members of all ages have been meeting every other Monday afternoon, with an hour dedicated to creating sympathetic and artistic projects to help brighten the day of others. Club staff Rema Mohammad and Tiani Tuiolosega lead the program, rallying kids to participate and connecting with organizations, from local children’s hospitals to army bases, who can distribute the creative projects to all those who would benefit from a heartfelt gift.
8 year old Heart Club member Valentina Chan says, “My favorite part of the Heart Club is you get to do things for the soldiers who have given a lot for the country.”

HELP US WIN THE GLOBAL GIVING CHALLENGE!
The Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Valley has joined the American Open Access Challenge 2009 hosted by GlobalGiving.org. We can win the challenge by raising just $4,000 from 50 individual donors! Proceeds raised from the Challenge will help fund the Building Dreams campaign, providing preschool classroom supplies for the future Boys and Girls Club to be built at Golden West College.
By winning the challenge, Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley will earn a permanent position on the GlobalGiving website, which serves as a clearinghouse for donors worldwide looking for worthwhile charities to donate to. The Challenge ends June 30th, leaving us only two weeks to meet our goal of $4,000 from 50 separate individuals! We know that with your help we can reach this target and place the Building Dreams Campaign in prime position to receive donations from individuals and businesses worldwide.
Please visit www.GlobalGiving.com/2944 to participate and make a donation of $10 or more today. Every little bit counts, and even a small contribution will put us one step closer to building dreams of bright futures for our community’s kids!

LEARNING CENTER RECEIVES NAEYC ACCREDITATION
Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley has received great news to start the New Year! On January 5, the Club received word that our Learning Center Preschool has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), valid through 2013.
In earning national accreditation, the Learning Center has proven that the quality of the care provided for its members is exceptional! Media outlets ranging from Parents magazine to the Wall Street Journal refer to NAEYC accreditation as “the gold standard” in early childhood education programs.
The rigorous accreditation process required the Learning Center to show that it met standards in curriculum; teaching; leadership and management; health; relationships with children, families and community partners; environments created in classrooms and facilities; continuing education of teachers and more.
The Learning Center excelled in each of these areas and even had scores of greater than 100% in several of these areas for demonstrating best practices that are not yet required for accreditation. The Learning Center is one of only three NAEYC accredited centers in Huntington Beach and less than 200 in the state of California.
